Focusing on authority, sovereignty, legitimacy and community rights, this work explains how Kashmir's modern Muslim identity came into being. It shows that the origins of the conflict between Kashmir Muslims and Hindu rule lie in the 100-year period preceding the creation of India and Pakistan.
