Looking at the emotional content of ethnic violence, Johnson examines the the history of ethnic identity in Lebanon and the civil wars of the 1970s and 80s. He demonstrates that values of ethnic honour and shame are modern phenomena, and in this style of violence shame acquires its own dynamics.
