How do I order a book at the VU Bookstore?
To be able to place an order, you must create an account. It is possible to create an account while ordering.
Do I receive a track-and-trace code?
You will receive a track-and-trace code from PostNL immediately after payment. On the website which is mentioned in the email, you can look up when your package will be delivered.
How much are the delivery charges?
the VU Bookstore charges €1,95 per delivery, regardless of the size of the order.
Who delivers my package?
The VU Bookstore mails the books. Delivery is done by PostNL.
How long does it take for my book to be delivered?
Books which we have in stock are delivered the next working day. That is why we can deliver almost all textbooks very quickly. If we don't have the books in stock, delivery of Dutch textbooks takes 2 and delivery of non-Dutch textbooks takes 3 working days; apart from exceptions.

I have not received my delivery yet, what can I do?
You can check on our website under 'account' whether your order has been sent or if it's still being processed.
If your order has been sent according to our website, but you still haven't received it, please check the delivery status using the track-and-tracecode you've received in your mailbox. If you still haven't received anything 3 days after your order has been sent, you can email .
To be of service as fast as possible, we request that you mention your order number in your email. Please also specify that you ordered via the VU Bookstore.
Which payment methods are available?
You can use Ideal or credit card to pay.

Where can I find information about my invoices and payments?
You can review your invoices and the state of your orders under my account. Have you forgotten your password? Request a new password via reset password..

How long does it take for my payment to get processed?
We process your Ideal payment directly. It will be stated on your invoice whether you have paid. You will also receive an email from your bank.

I would like to have a copy of the invoice. Where can I find it?
You can download a copy from mijn account.

Can I still change the information on my invoice?
You can't change information on the invoice by yourself. For a changed invoice, you can contact us via email.

I have returned a product or cancelled my order. When will my money be refunded?
the VU Bookstore strives to refund money from returns and cancelled orders as fast as possible. If you haven't received your money after a week, you can send an email mentioning your name and the title of the book. Please also specify that it concerns an order via the VU Bookstore.
How do I cancel my order?
You can cancel your order during the ordering process. Remove the books from your shopping cart to do so. Have you already completed your payment and would you like to cancel? Contact the VU Bookstore if this is the case. Please mention your order data in this email.

I have cancelled my order, but the book still got delivered. What can I do?
If you have received your order despite cancellation, the order was already processed and could not be cancelled anymore. If this is the case, contact the VU Bookstore via email. Please mention your order information in this email.
Undamaged books can be returned in accordance with articles 6, 7 and 8 of our Delivery Conditions. The buyer is obliged by the Law of Distance Purchase to review the products to see if they meet their requirements. If this is not the case, the buyer is expected to notify the VU Bookstore of this in writing or via email within ten working days after reception. If it has been demonstrated that the products don't comply with the agreement, the VU Bookstore has the choice to either replace said products or refund the corresponding invoice value.

To successfully return a book, please attach (a copy of) your receipt to your shipment.

Please note: Textbooks can neither be returned during the week prior to the exam nor when the term has finished.

Can I also return my book at the VU Bookstore?
Yes, that is possible. Bring your receipt when you visit us. You can return a book if you meet the above requirements.

Which textbooks can I never return?
Apart from technical defects, books which have been sold sealed in and aren't sealed in anymore cannot be returned.
Books containing a code can also not be returned!
We only accept returns if the books are undamaged.

Who pays for the return?
The costs for the return are to be paid by the buyer.
Returns are incurred at the risk for the buyer. This means that the VU Bookstore cannot be held accountable for damage to returned products or returned products getting lost. Because of this, we recommend to always ask for a track-and-trace code.

Does the paid amount get refunded automatically when I return an order?
If your return meets the previously stated requirements, you will receive the purchase amount on your bank account. If you return a book in the VU Bookstore, you will receive a coupon with unlimited validity. Textbooks can ONLY be returned after consultation and with permission from a VU Bookstore employee.

I bought a textbook, but I am not continuing my study. Can I return it?
You can only return textbooks if you can demonstrate that you are quitting your study. Please bring your receipt(s). The books must be in perfect condition.
Is there a warranty on products I bought at the VU Bookstore?
For all products you buy at the VU Bookstore, the Dutch law for warranty applies. This means that a product must be in good condition. In case you receive a product or book of which this is not the case, we will help you to find an a suitable solution. We can send a replacement product, or refund the amount.

I ordered books at the VU Bookstore, bu they were delivered in bad condition. What can I do?
You have the right to return every purchase without giving any reason within dagen. You can return the book in our store, or you can mail it to us.
I don't have an account yet, how do I make one?
During the ordering process, you can enter your address as well as indicate whether you are a the VU Bookstore member. You can become a member online. the VU Bookstore will contact you afterwards to complete your membership. You can always review or change your account information via Account information on this website.
The next time you order, you can make changes to your delivery address or your invoice address.

I've forgotten my password. What can I do?
Via Forgotten password on this website, you can request a new password easily. After entering your email address, you will receive an email with a link to reset your password.

I've moved, where can I enter my new address?
You can change your information via Account information. Would you like to change the delivery address of your recent order? In this case, contact the VU Bookstore. Please mention your order information when contacting us.
I'm using a different email address, where can I change it?

You will receive your delivery on the address you filled in while ordering. If this is not the right address, please contact one of our staff. Please mention your order data when contacting us. While ordering, you can choose to receive your invoice on an address different from your delivery address. You can change this information for each order.

Where can I buy my textbooks?
The VU Bookstore sells textbooks for all courses offered by the VU. For a list of all courses and subjects, please see We have books in stock for the current or upcoming term. We don't have all books for the entire academic year in stock at the same time. You can visit the VU Bookstore to buy textbooks, or you can order via We also work together with study associations. See our website for an overview. As a member of a study association, you can buy books with a discount, ensuring that you'll pay the lowest price possible!

Nowhere in the Netherlands can you buy textbooks cheaper than via a study association at the VU. As a member, you can take advantage of our low-price-guarantee. If you're able to find the textbook for a lower price at a different Dutch webshop, you will receive the difference from us. Another reason to become a member.

Where can I see which books I need?
Every course at the VU has a study guide. You can find these study guides online. In the study guides you can find exactly which subjects you are going to follow. If you know exactly which subjects you're going to follow, you can select your books per term on our website. We get our information from the study guides, or we receive the information directly from the teachers.

Can I check which textbooks the VU Bookstore has in stock?
On our website, you can't view which books we actually have in store. To check whether we have a book in stock, it's best to contact us or to visit us in the VU Bookstore. A rule of thumb is that we have all studybooks for the current and upcoming term in stock. These can be delivered the next working day if you order online. Are you not sure about a certain book? Contact us via: and receive an answer the same working day.

The website mentions that a book is 'in stock'. What does that mean?
'In stock' means that we can deliver the book. 'In stock' does not necessarily mean that we have the book in store. We have textbooks in stock for the current and upcoming term. 'In stock' does mean that we can order the book. The time of delivery is dependant on where whe have ordered the book. For textbooks for the current and upcoming term, time of delivery is usually several working days.

I need a textbook for a course that has already started, but the book is not available at the VU Bookstore. What can I do?
It is possible that your delivery has been delayed. This could have different causes. We do everything we can to have prescribed textbooks in stock as fast as possible. Most of the time, the following applies: if you weren't able to get it, other students also haven't been able to get it. We try our best to deliver books as soon as possible. We notify the teacher of any problems that may occur.

Does the VU Bookstore sell second-hand textbooks?
The VU Bookstore does not sell second-hand textbooks. You can offer your books for sale via We sell second-hand books in cooperation with the study associations of the VU. You'll receive a good amount for your second-hand textbook and it will be sold quickly via the study association.

Does the VU Bookstore have booklists which mention exactly which textbooks I need?
The VU Bookstore does not have any booklists which mention exactly which textbooks you'll need. The amount of different courses makes this impossible. In the study guide and online at is mentioned clearly which books you need for each subject.

Im going to follow a subject, but it isn't mentioned on the the VU Bookstore website. What can I do?
For some subjects, no books are prescribed. Those subjects are not mentioned on our website. It is possible that there are no books for a certain subject on our site, while there are prescribed books for that subject. We'd like to hear about it via:

I would like to buy all my textbooks at once, is that possible?
You can buy all your textbooks at once, but we advise against it. It is both very expensive and risky, because the prescribed literature may change. Additionally, textbooks can be replaced by newer editions. This means that you may buy the wrong book, or that you may buy a book which you don't need at all. Only order books for the upcoming term to be guaranteed to get the right books!

Ik heb een syllabus nodig, kan ik die bij de VU Boekhandel kopen?
De VU Boekhandel verkoopt naast studieboeken, ook syllabi. Met name voor de faculteiten rechten en letteren verschijnen er regelmatig syllabi of readers voor verschillende vakken. Deze syllabi en readers worden besteld door de docenten of de coördinatoren van een vak. Zij geven door aan de drukker hoeveel syllabi er gedrukt moeten worden. De VU Boekhandel verkoopt de syllabi aan studenten.

Kan ik ergens zien of een syllabus al op voorraad is?
Syllabi of readers zijn pas op voorraad als je ze via deze site kunt bestellen. Als ze nog niet online staan, betekent dit dat we ze (nog) niet hebben.

Ik heb gehoord dat een syllabus op is. Kan ik via de VU Boekhandel nieuwe syllabi bestellen?
De VU Boekhandel kan geen syllabi bestellen. Docenten of coördinatoren geven aan de drukker door hoeveel syllabi of readers er moeten komen. Wij geven het wel door aan docenten/coördinatoren als een syllabus op is. Je kunt het beste zelf even contact opnemen met de docent om te vragen of er een passende oplossing is en of er nog een nieuwe hoeveelheid syllabi gedrukt zal worden.

Wat is een studievereniging?
Een studievereniging is niet hetzelfde als een studentenvereniging. Iedere faculteit aan de VU heeft n of meerdere studieverenigingen. Zij verzorgen allerlei leuke activiteiten, zoals excursies, borrels en feesten. En ze doen nog iets heel belangrijks: ze verkopen studieboeken met hoge kortingen. Nergens anders kun je zo goedkoop je studieboeken kopen. Dus word vandaag nog lid en profiteer van deze korting!

Welke studievereniging hoort bij mijn opleiding?

Hoeveel korting krijg ik op mijn studieboeken als ik lid ben van een studievereniging?
Als je lid bent van een studievereniging, krijg je zeer gunstige korting op je studieboeken. Kijk bij de studievereniging van jouw faculteit naar de condities. Studieboeken bij studieverenigingen zijn altijd goedkoper dan elders.

Reserveren van Nederlandstalige studieboeken
Als je reserveert krijg je op Nederlandstalige titels bij een studievereniging 10% korting. Je moet dan wel van tevoren een boek 'reserveren'. Dit heeft te maken met de Nederlandse wetgeving. Als je een boek niet van tevoren reserveert, krijg je ook geen 10% korting.

Bestellen/direct afrekenen van Nederlandstalige studieboeken
Als je Nederlandse boeken bestelt via je de site van je studievereniging krijg je 5% korting. Je krijgt deze korting alleen als je lid bent van een studievereniging en alleen als je minimaal twee verschillende Nederlandstalige boeken bestelt. Je krijgt ook 5% korting als je de boeken direct afrekent bij je studievereniging of in de VU Boekhandel. Je krijgt ook dan alleen korting als je lid bent van een studievereniging en dit kunt aantonen, en als je minimaal twee verschillende Nederlandstalige boeken tegelijk koopt. Deze regels vloeien voort uit de Wet op de Vaste Boekenprijs.

Bestellen/direct afrekenen van Engelstalige boeken
Engelstalige (studie)boeken zijn altijd supervoordelig als je lid bent van een studievereniging. Het maakt niet uit of je je studieboeken online bestelt, direct afrekent bij je studievereniging of in de VU Boekhandel koopt: je krijgt altijd tussen de 12 en 15% korting op Engelstalige studieboeken. Vanaf dit jaar krijg je ook 10% korting op 'gewone' Engelstalige boeken in de VU Boekhandel. Deze korting is exclusief voor studenten die lid zijn van een studievereniging.

Waar kan ik lid worden van een studievereniging?
Word meteen lid! Je eerste bestelling heb je het lidmaatschapsgeld er meestal al uit. Je kunt online lid worden als je bestelt via de webshop van de studievereniging. Ook in de VU Boekhandel kun je direct lid worden. Vul het formulier in dat bij de kassa ligt. Natuurlijk kun je bij de verenigingen zelf ook je aanmelden. Kijk voor een overzicht van alle verenigingen op deze site.

Krijg ik ook korting op studieboeken die ik in de VU Boekhandel koop als ik lid ben van een studievereniging?
Als je lid bent van een studievereniging, krijg je een pasje of en sticker op je collegekaart. Daardoor mag je van alle studieverenigingen je studieboeken ook in de VU Boekhandel kopen, met korting. Je moet dan wel altijd je pasje of de sticker laten zien bij de kassa. Ook in de VU Boekhandel kan je nog lid worden van een studievereniging. Je moet dan een formulier invullen, maar je kan dan wel direct je boeken met korting kopen.

Krijg ik, omdat ik student ben, korting op 'gewone' boeken bij de VU Boekhandel?
Als je lid bent van een studievereniging biedt de VU Boekhandel 10% korting op Engelstalige titels. Van romans tot non-fictie: Engelstalige boeken zijn zeer voordelig bij de VU Boekhandel.
Waar kan ik als docent informatie kwijt over de studieboeken die ik wil voorschrijven?
Wij vernemen graag van u welke boeken u gaat gebruiken bij uw colleges. Die informatie is voor ons heel belangrijk. Wij nemen de boeken op voorraad en bij leveringsproblemen nemen wij contact met u op. Door ons grote inkoopvolume kunnen we de studenten een goede prijs bieden. De samenwerking met alle studieverenigingen biedt de garantie dat alle VU-studenten de boeken op tijd hebben voor een goede prijs. Kan ik ook een docentexemplaar ontvangen via de VU Boekhandel?
Op de site op de pagina Studieboeken/docenten kunt u snel en eenvoudig een docentexemplaar aanvragen. Door ons uitstekende contact met alle grote uitgeverijen kunnen wij u vrijwel altijd een exemplaar toesturen.
Verkoopt de VU Boekhandel tweedehands studieboeken?
De VU Boekhandel verkoopt geen tweedehands studieboeken. Je kunt je boeken wel aanbieden voor verkoop via deze site. De verkoop gebeurt via de studieverenigingen waar de VU Boekhandel mee samenwerkt. Je ontvangt een goede prijs voor je tweedehands studieboek en het wordt via de studievereniging snel verkocht. Op het moment dat iemand uw boek koopt, brengt u het naar de VU Boekhandel en ontvang u snel uw geld. Lees het bericht dat u ontvang na uw aanmelding zorgvuldig door.

Welke prijs ontvang ik?
Dat verschilt per boek. Bij het aanbieden kunt u kiezen uit 'gebruikt' en ‘intensief gebruikt'. Als een boek 'intensief gebruikt' is, bevat het veel markeringen. Een 'gebruikt' boek ziet er zo goed als nieuw uit. Voor een boek dat slechts gebruikt is, ontvangt u dan ook het hoogste bedrag.
